Following decades of soviet-type development that largely ignored the health of ecosystems, Ukraine is suffering the consequences of severe environmental degradation and energy inefficiency. Several critical issues such as air pollution, development of renewable energy resources, water supply, and nuclear issues remain to be addressed. The national environmental policy currently aims to stabilize and improve the environmental situation in Ukraine, enabling the transition to sustainable economic development and an environmentally balanced system of nature. Priorities include environmental responsibility, environmental risk analysis and prediction, environmental protection and preservation of natural resources, and cross-sectoral partnerships to reduce negative environmental impacts. The country is also actively involved with international environmental actions and is party to many international conventions and protocols. Nevertheless, Ukraine’s low level of material well-being and stage of economic development mean that environmental improvements are moving slowly.
