Canadian experts mentioned positive results in development, management and implementation of small projects in Zakarpattya
On November 20-21 and 24, 2008 C. Houlihan, Gender and Youth Expert and A. Szyptur, Civil Society Expert, along with Y. Boyko and S. Slava, RGD Planning Experts, visited six rayons of Zakarpattya. During these visits experts had a series of working meetings with teams of the small projects that are being developed within the Project Management Training program carried out by Regional Governance and Development project* in cooperation with Zakarpattya Oblast State Administration.

During these visits Canadian experts had an opportunity to learn more about results achieved by the following projects: “Creation of Tourist Information Center in Mukachevo” (Mukachevo), “Improvement of Ecological Situation in Beregovo through Reconstruction of a Flood-Gate in the Verke Channel” (Berehov), “Creation of Hospice Institution to Provide Palliative Care and Psychological Support to People with Serious Illnesses and Members of their Families” (Vinogradiv Rayon), “Establishing Recreation Camp for Socially Vulnerable Children” (Tyachiv Rayon), “Reconstruction of Khust Cultural and Recreation Center for Spiritual and Physical Development of its Citizens (Reconstruction of City Stadium, Local Parks, Expansion of Services and Activities of City Art Gallery, etc.)” (Khust), “Elaborating Concept for Development of Recreational and Tourism Activities (Lazeshinska, Chornotusyanska, Kvasivska Village Councils and Jasynjanska Village Council)” (Uzhgorod) and others. More than 30 people took part in these meetings, including Heads of Rayon State Administrations and Village Councils, which demonstrates high level of interest of the state authorities in small projects implementation.

«We had an opportunity to visit seven projects in six rayons of Zakarpattya. It was really interesting for us to see positive approach of the communities to project implementation, because such projects can significantly improve social and economic situation in these rayons. It’s very good that rayon administrations are supportive. It is worth saying that such projects exist not only in Ukraine but also in Canada where I live. Infrastructure of small towns and cities needs renovation and requires resources, which often are not available. Canadian community seeks funds not only from government and foundations, but also from town budgets and private businessmen to create one big project, in which all people can take part», - Ann Szyptur commented on this trip.

As mentioned by C. Houlihan: “Initiative groups working with small projects in Zakarpattya have positive attitudes and are very energetic. I am happy to see that people have relevant experience and enthusiasm. Support of the community is very important. To my opinion, these rayons have sufficient resources and potential that people may not be aware of».
