European Bank for Reconstruction and Development offers its support in reconstruction of water cleaning facilities in Uzhgorod
EBRD offered Uzhgorod City Council officials to carry out economic and financial assessment of water supply system and water cleaning facilities” reconstruction. This issue was discussed at the meeting of EBRD representative and Deputy Head of Uzhgorod City Council on December 15, 2008. Zakarpattya Regional Office of Regional Governance and Development project (RGD project) initiated this meting. RGD project is funded by Canadian International Development Agency and implemented by Canadian Urban Institute.
As a result of the Capital Grants Training carried out in summer 2008 by RGD project Uzhgorod Council has developed infrastructure investment project proposal on reconstruction of Uzhgorod water cleaning facilities (total project budget is 72.0 mln. UAH). In July 2008 this proposal was presented to the representatives of international financial and lending institutions and received positive feedback from EBRD. One of the project outcomes might be introduction of new cleaning methods, which will improve socio-ecological situation in the city. However, V. Hymynets, Deputy Head of Uzhgorod City Council, admitted that water cleaning facilities” reconstruction should be implemented along with reconstruction of water-supply system and improvement of water quality, as well as ensuring twenty-four-hour water supply for the citizens. This idea was supported by Grzegorz Gajda, EBRD representative, who noted that the bank is ready to finance water cleaning facilities” reconstruction and suggested that City Council will finance water supply in Uzhgorod.
At the moment the parties agreed that EBRD will develop preliminary agreement and share it with Uzhgorod City Council.
