On March 15, 2007 a workshop on "Main Priorities for Zaporizhzhia Oblast’s Future Development" was held in Zaporizhzhia
The Canada-Ukraine Partnership Project for Regional Governance and Development (RGD Project) together with the Zaporizhzhia Oblast State Administration and Zaporizhzhia Oblast Council, conducted a workshop on SWOT-analysis to determine the strengths and weaknesses, threats and opportunities of the oblast and on priorities setting to complete the next stage of the strategic planning process.

Mr. Kaltsev, Deputy Head of Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration, opened the workshop and Mr. Shamilov, President of Zaporizhzhia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Head of the Constant Committee on the Social and Economic Development of Zaporizhzhia Regional Council, and Mr. Vanat, President of Zaporizhzhia Regional Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs “Potentsial”, welcomed the workshop participants. Among the participants were representatives of local executive government and self-government bodies, Zaporizhzhia regional, district and city Working Groups on Strategic Planning, as well as NGOs, academia and business representatives of Zaporizhzhia oblast.

I. Lekh, RGD Project Manager in Zaporizhzhia region, presented the vision statement for Zaporizhzhia region’s development and the directions for development, which come from this statement – Economic, Historical and Cultural, Environmental, Resort and Tourism, Agricultural, Industrial, Investing, Educational and Scientific, Social, as well as Self-Governance and Human Rights Protection. Then, experts on different areas presented scenarios for Zaporizhzhia region’s development if their respective area was chosen as a priority.

The results of the analysis of the current situation in the oblast and the process of setting priorities for the region’s future development was summed up at the workshop. S. Mohylnyi, RGD Project strategic planning expert, made a presentation on the survey results of the region’s citizens regarding their development priorities. At the end of the workshop, all participants voted for the priorities they supported. Out of ten possible areas for the region’s development, two were chosen by the public – Environmental and Tourism. The final priorities for Zaporizhzhia region’s development will be approved at the Regional Working Group meeting to be held on March 20, 2007.
