On September 22, 2006 a workshop entitled: “Forming the Vision and Identifying the Priorities of Regional Development”" will be hold in Uzhgorod
Zakarpattya is at the important stage of forming its regional development strategy. A large percentage of the population must be involved in the process of creating the regional development strategy. This opportunity will be given by the international workshop “Forming the vision and identifying the priorities of regional development”, which will be held on the 22nd of September at the hotel “Hostynnij Dim”. The workshop is organized by the Transcarpathian Regional Council, Transcarpathian Regional State Administration and Canadian Urban Institute in the framework of the Regional Governance and Development Project, with financial support from the Canadian International Development Agency. The main organizations involved are the main Department of Economy, which is developing the Regional Strategy, and Transcarpathian Regional Centre, which was established in the framework of the Regional Governance and Development Project. Representatives of local authorities and self-government, members of the Regional Council and Coordination Council, NGOs, scientists and businesses from the region are invited to the workshop. Through this workshop, participants will develop the vision for the region, the Lviv Regional Researches Institute will discuss the SWOT analysis that they developed, and the group will identify the main priorities for regional development. An international expert in strategic planning, Gary Davidson, PhD, will take part in the workshop. He has a lot of experience in the process of developing regional strategies with wide public involvement in the decision making process. The Regional Governance and Development Project demonstrates the importance of taking into account the public’s ideas when forming the Regional Strategy. With the support of the Regional Governance and Development Project, the Regional Development Council was established on 13th of July by representatives of NGOs, businesses, local authorities, and self-governments. As a result of the Regional Development Council’s work, a plan of activity on how to involve the community in the strategic planning process was developed. This Activity Plan is named the “Communication Strategy”, which will also be discussed at the workshop. Based on the work outlined in the Communication Strategy, several informational programs are planned to form the vision and identify the priorities of the Transcarpathian Region. Examples include holding a competition for students and pupils, entitled “My Family and I”, which aims to gather the ideas of Transcarpathian youth on their vision for the Region.
