Regional Development Workshop in Uzhgorod - July 17, 2006
On July 17, 2006 within the framework of the “Regional Governance and Development Project” together with Zakarpattya Regional State Administration and Zakarpattya Regional Council an International Workshop “EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD OF STRATEGIC PLANNING: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES” was held in Uzhgorod.

During the workshop Mr. Peter Partington and Mr. Michael Boggs presented the challenges and opportunities of the Niagara region development. Workshop participants gained information as to Canadian experience of involvement of the community into decision making process and with strategic planning experience of Ukrainian regions which had been presented by Mr. William Pardy, Canadian consultant of the Community Economic Development project, Ukraine and Mr. Krzysztof Herbst, Lviv Development Project Director from Poland.

Economic and tourism potential of Zakarpattya region was presented by representatives of Zakarpattya Regional State Administration Mr. Mikhajlo Petrovtsi, Head of the Main Department of Economy and Mr. Olexandr Marchenko, Head of the European Integration and Tourism Development Department.

Ms. Natalie Nosa, regional manager of “Regional Governance and Development Project”, briefed about project activities in Zakarpattya and presented the vision of future cooperation between Canada and Ukraine. She noted that in Zakarpattya region the Strategy for Development will be developed thanks to project support and united efforts of authorities, self-government, NGO and business, which will be a pilot model for implementation in other region in Ukraine. Zakarpattya Project Regional Center is already established in Uzhhorod and represents the project in the region.

Representatives of authorities, self-government, NGOs and business sectors participated in the workshop. All participants appreciated the possibilities of future cooperation and expressed their wishes to develop and strengthen partnerships between Canadian and Ukrainian regions in the context of experience exchange in the field of strategic planning.
