Ukrainian Project Manager
The Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) (www.canurb.com) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in cities and regions in Canada and around the world. Our work is dedicated to building strong communities within equitable, sustainable and competitive urban regions. The CUI is an innovator and catalyst engaged in capacity building, research, networking, leadership development, planning and policy development. We collaborate with a range of international partners – in Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, and Africa – to improve local and regional governance and management. THE CUI IS SEEKING A HIGHLY MOTIVATED AND SELF-DIRECTED INDIVIDUAL TO JOIN OUR INTERNATIONAL TEAM AS UKRAINIAN PROJECT MANAGER. The Regional Governance and Development (RGD) Project (www.rgd.org.ua) is a five-year project funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) (www.acdi-cida.gc.ca), implemented in Ukraine through a partnership with the Ministry of Economy (MOE) (http://me.kmu.gov.ua) and in association with the National Association of Regional Development Agencies (NARDA) (www.narda.org.ua). The project is designed to promote civic engagement in regional governance, providing opportunities for citizens and communities to shape their common future and to put their region on the path towards sustainable development. It helps strengthen regional development policy in the country by providing advice to the Ministry of Economy, by sharing know-how from other jurisdictions in Europe and North America, and by supporting two pilot oblasts – Zaporizhzhia and Zakarpattya – to establish participatory processes that give a voice to civil society, business and local authorities in regional planning and decision-making. Based in Kyiv, the Ukrainian Project Manager (UPM) will serve a dual role in the RGD project. Working under the direction of the Canadian Project Manager and overseeing the work of the project staff team in Ukraine, she/he will provide overall management of the project in Ukraine on a day-to-day basis, planning and implementing activities, ensuring the achievement of planned results, and providing sound administration of project finances. The UPM will also act as an expert in his/her area of competency, providing advice and technical assistance to project partners and participants. Candidates shall have: (1) a minimum of 5 years experience in the leadership and management of multifaceted technical cooperation projects, (2) a demonstrated ability to convene participatory governance processes, (3) a strong understanding of and skills in partnership-building, (4) an advanced education related to one or more of the substantive areas of the project; and (5) excellent communication skills and fluency in both English and Ukrainian (comprehension, written, and spoken). This is a contract position until April 1, 2010, extendable contingent on job performance and continued program funding. Salary commensurate with experience, skills, expertise and education. Position available immediately. Please send a detailed CV as well as a cover letter (in both English and Ukrainian) outlining relevancy of experience to the position and your earliest available start date by email to jobs@canurb.com. The deadline for submissions is November 10, 2008. A detailed job description is available on request. We thank all candidates in advance for their applications, but be advised that only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. No inquiries please (telephone, email or in person).
